A devastating fire at a residential apartment in Abuakwa Manhyia, Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region, has claimed the lives of six people, including a three-month-old baby. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Monday, December 22, 2025.

Assemblyman for Abuakwa Manhyia, Evans Opoku, said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. He noted that the incident was reported shortly after power had been restored to parts of the Ashanti Region following a temporary outage on Sunday evening.

Firefighters from Nkawie and Twedie Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene, but the victims were reportedly trapped inside the apartment, leading to their deaths. The police have identified the charred bodies and are making arrangements to convey them to the morgue as investigations continue.

Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipal Chief Executive, Wisdom Osei Boamah, described the tragedy as particularly distressing given the upcoming Christmas celebrations. He noted that such disasters have occurred before in the area and urged residents to take fire safety seriously.

“This is very disturbing news for us, and people in the area will never forget this. We are in a very difficult situation, and I am using this opportunity to console the bereaved family at this difficult time,” he said.
