Six potential recruits have been confirmed dead, with several others injured, following a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during the 2025/2026 Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise on Wednesday morning.
A statement from the Department of Public Relations of the GAF said the incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. when an unexpected surge of applicants breached security protocols and rushed through the stadium gates ahead of the scheduled screening.
“The unfortunate incident led to the death of six potential recruits and many others injured. The injured are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital,” the statement said.
The GAF noted that preliminary investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and assured that measures will be put in place to prevent a recurrence in subsequent recruitment exercises.
