South African singer Tyla has won the Best African Music Performance award at the recent Grammy Awards, edging out Nigerian stars Davido, Burna Boy and Ayra Starr, as well as Ugandan singer Eddy Kenzo.
The 24-year-old clinched the prize with her song Push 2 Start, which was selected ahead of Love by Burna Boy, With You by Davido featuring Omah Lay, Gimme Dat by Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid, and Hope & Love by Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin.
Reacting after the ceremony in Los Angeles, Tyla described the moment as “insane” and expressed pride in representing Africa on the global stage.
The win marks her second success in the category, having also claimed the award in 2024 for her global hit Water.
Her victory sparked widespread celebration on social media in South Africa, while some Nigerian fans expressed disappointment after none of the country’s nominees won, despite the continued global popularity of Afrobeats.
