The University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL) has been named the best law school in Ghana and West Africa, ranking sixth in Africa in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject for Law.

Released on January 21, 2026, the rankings place the University of Ghana in the 251–300 global band, making UGSoL the only law school in Ghana to feature in the latest THE subject rankings for Law. The assessment evaluated 425 universities from 53 countries using 18 performance indicators, covering areas such as constitutional law, international law, commercial law, criminal justice and legal theory.

The results highlight UGSoL’s growing academic influence and research strength amid increasing demand for high-quality legal education across Africa. While South African universities dominated the top five positions, UGSoL’s sixth-place finish underscores its rising continental and international standing.

Founded in 1959, the University of Ghana School of Law is the country’s oldest law institution and has produced generations of judges, legal practitioners and policymakers. The recognition aligns with the University of Ghana’s 2024–2029 Strategic Plan, which emphasises global visibility, academic excellence and impactful research.
