Benin’s Finance Minister, Romuald Wadagni, has won a decisive victory in the country’s April 12 presidential election, securing more than 94% of the vote according to provisional results released by the national electoral commission.
Sacca Lafia, head of the independent electoral body, announced that the results were based on over 90% of ballots counted, giving Wadagni an unassailable lead. Voter turnout was reported at 58.78%.
Opposition candidate Paul Hounkpe conceded defeat earlier in the day, effectively confirming Wadagni’s path to the presidency pending final certification of results.
