Tensions flared in Walewale after a group of agitated youth stormed the Municipal Assembly premises on Tuesday, barricading the office of Municipal Coordinating Director, Justice Bayon, in protest over alleged poor performance and neglect.

The demonstrators, numbering dozens, arrived early in the morning chanting slogans and demanding immediate action on what they described as longstanding concerns, including unemployment, deteriorating roads, and stalled development projects. The situation caused panic among staff and disrupted official activities.

Sources indicate that Mr. Bayon left the premises prior to the group’s arrival after receiving intelligence about the planned protest. The youth later forced their way into sections of the building and locked up his office.

Speaking to the media, protesters accused the Director of absenteeism and incompetence, calling on government authorities to replace him. They warned of further action if their demands are not addressed.

The protest also highlighted frustration over idle development equipment and worsening road conditions, particularly during heavy rains.

While no injuries were reported, the incident left municipal workers shaken. Municipal Chief Executive Mohammed Rabiu Jabaah said he would need clearance from the Regional Minister before commenting, while Justice Bayon declined to speak on the matter.
