The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has appealed for immediate government intervention following severe flooding caused by the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the MP said he had spent the past three days helping residents evacuate flooded homes and businesses as rising waters continued to affect parts of the constituency.

“It hasn’t been easy at all. I have been swimming for the past three days, helping people to evacuate. My people are suffering. Weija-Gbawe is under siege,” he stated.

The flooding followed the opening of all five spill gates of the Weija Dam as part of routine measures to manage rising inflows and safeguard the dam’s structural integrity. The spillage caused water levels downstream to surge into nearby communities.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says at least 85 affected residents have been relocated to designated safe shelters.
