The Accra High Court has adjourned to October 15, 2026, the bail application pending appeal filed by former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The application was expected to be heard on Wednesday, August 19, but Wontumi and his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, were absent from court. The court clerk informed the parties that the trial judge was unavailable this week.

NPP Director of Legal Affairs Gary Nimako was present, while Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai represented the state.

Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted by the Accra High Court on illegal mining-related offences linked to a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.

His lawyers are seeking bail pending the determination of his appeal against the conviction and sentence. The Attorney-General has opposed the application, arguing that Wontumi poses a flight risk.

The court is expected to hear the bail application when proceedings resume on October 15.
