The late Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abubakari II, has been laid to rest at the royal mausoleum in Yendi following traditional burial rites conducted at dawn in accordance with Dagbon customs.

The solemn ceremony was led by the Kuga Naa and the Dagbon Consecrated Council of Elders, with only selected elders and family members present for the final rites. Chiefs, traditional leaders, and residents gathered to pay their last respects to the 41st Yaa Naa, whose reign was widely credited with promoting peace, unity, and reconciliation in the Dagbon Kingdom.

Enskinned in January 2019 after the resolution of the long-standing Dagbon chieftaincy dispute, Yaa Naa Abubakari II played a key role in restoring stability following years of division.

With his burial completed, the kingdom has entered a period of mourning and will begin the next stage of the traditional succession process. The late king’s eldest son is expected to be enskinned as Kpampayaa Naa to serve as Regent until a new Yaa Naa is selected in accordance with Dagbon custom.
