The Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has officially assumed office as the new Minister of Science and Environment, pledging to implement transformative measures to address Ghana’s environmental challenges.
She took over at a handing-over ceremony at the ministry from the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, who had been serving as acting minister.
Dr Agyeman-Rawlings called for collective action, discipline, transparency and accountability in tackling environmental concerns, stressing that protecting the environment must be a shared responsibility.
She said government institutions, communities, civil society organisations, the private sector and individuals all have important roles to play in protecting Ghana’s natural resources and addressing environmental degradation and climate change.
The minister acknowledged the government’s responsibility to provide leadership and develop policies that promote sustainable environmental practices and protect resources for future generations.
She also called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders in the environmental sector, noting that challenges such as pollution, environmental degradation and climate change require coordinated and long-term solutions.
Dr Agyeman-Rawlings further urged public officials and institutions under the ministry to uphold high standards of transparency and accountability in managing taxpayers’ money.
She pledged to work with relevant institutions, communities and other stakeholders to promote innovative and sustainable approaches to environmental management.
Her assumption of office comes as Ghana continues to confront major environmental challenges, including illegal mining, pollution, environmental degradation and the growing impact of climate change on communities and livelihoods.
