The Ghana National Association of Teachers in the Ashanti Region has warned it may direct teachers to boycott the English Language paper of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) if a detained colleague is not granted bail.
The teacher, Eric Buernortey Apaflo, a hostel caretaker at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in the Atwima Mponua District, was arrested following an incident involving a final-year female student and has reportedly remained in police custody.
GNAT expressed concern over the handling of the case, stating that the continued detention of the teacher raises questions about due process. The association has called on the police to grant him bail and urged education authorities to intervene.
According to GNAT officials, failure to release the teacher could result in teachers at Nyinahin Catholic SHS and across the district withdrawing their services during the WASSCE. They further warned that if the situation remains unresolved, members may wear red armbands and embark on protest actions.
The association maintained that while it supports discipline within schools, it expects authorities to act fairly and swiftly to prevent further escalation.
