The Managing Director of the Landfills Company Limited, Dr. Peter Kwesi Dagadu, has revealed that Greater Accra currently depends on only two major landfill sites to manage the large volumes of waste generated daily, describing the situation as a major challenge for effective waste management.
According to him, the region’s growing population and increasing waste production have placed significant pressure on the limited disposal infrastructure. The two landfill sites serving the capital are the Kpone landfill in Greater Accra and the Adepa landfill in the Eastern Region.
Dr. Dagadu disclosed that the Kpone landfill has reached the end of its operational lifespan and is expected to shut down within the next six months after becoming fully exhausted. He noted that the Adepa landfill, a 120-acre facility, has the capacity to process up to 4,000 tonnes of waste daily and will play a critical role in managing the region’s waste after Kpone’s closure.
He stressed the need for long-term solutions to strengthen waste disposal infrastructure and support sustainable waste management in Greater Accra.
