President John Dramani Mahama has nominated two Court of Appeal judges and a former President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for appointment to Ghana’s Supreme Court. The nominees are Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, and private legal practitioner Tony Forson. The nominations were made in consultation with the Judicial Council, in line with the provisions of the 1992 Constitution, and are subject to parliamentary approval.
Justice Amoako Asante previously served as President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, while Justice Bernasko Essah brings extensive experience from the Court of Appeal. Tony Forson, the only nominee from private legal practice, is a former GBA President with a long-standing career in Ghana’s legal profession.
The three nominees will appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting before the House votes on their approval. If confirmed and sworn into office by the President, they will join the Supreme Court, increasing its membership from 18 to 21 justices and strengthening its capacity to handle constitutional, civil, and criminal cases.
