Members of Parliament have called for the establishment of a museum in the Ahanta West Municipality to preserve the returned head of Nana Badu Bonsu II, the Ahanta king executed by Dutch colonial authorities in 1838 during the Ahanta-Dutch War.
The proposal, presented by Ahanta West MP Mavis Kuukua Bissue, seeks to honour the late king’s legacy while promoting historical education, cultural preservation and tourism. She said the museum would ensure future generations learn about Badu Bonsu II’s resistance against colonial rule and his contribution to Ghana’s struggle for freedom.
The call received bipartisan support, with MPs describing the return of the king’s head from the Netherlands as an opportunity to preserve an important chapter of Ghana’s history. Lawmakers said a dedicated museum would strengthen cultural identity and boost heritage tourism in the Western Region.
The severed head of Nana Badu Bonsu II, repatriated to Ghana after more than 170 years through diplomatic efforts, is currently being kept at the 37 Military Hospital pending a decision on its permanent preservation.
