Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama has warned the public to stop spraying cedi notes at social events, stressing that the practice is illegal and punishable by law. Speaking at the 131st Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference in Accra, he said the central bank would intensify public education and enforce measures to curb the misuse of the national currency.
Responding to concerns over the rejection of cedi coins by some traders, Dr. Asiama reiterated that both cedi notes and coins are legal tender and must be accepted for transactions involving genuine currency. He noted that the Bank of Ghana would roll out awareness campaigns to encourage the proper use of cash and emphasized that spraying banknotes at functions would no longer be tolerated, with sanctions to be applied against offenders.
