The government has announced a GH¢5,500 support package for Ghanaian evacuees returning from South Africa to support their reintegration following recent xenophobic attacks.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said each returnee will receive a GH¢5,000 reintegration grant, a GH¢500 transport allowance, relief items from NADMO, and free NHIS registration. The initiative also includes job placement, skills training, entrepreneurship support, and psychosocial care.
Nearly 2,000 Ghanaians are expected to return under the two-phase evacuation exercise, with 926 already back in the country. A Presidential Task Force on Reintegration has been established to coordinate support, while about 200 job opportunities have already been secured through partnerships with private sector companies.
Mr Ablakwa also revealed that Ghana has petitioned the African Union to address recurring xenophobic attacks against African migrants in South Africa, urging a continent-wide response to safeguard the rights and dignity of all African citizens. He stressed that the petition is aimed at fostering dialogue and collective action rather than targeting South Africa.
