The Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy has been cancelled and that parents have been directed to pay GH¢1,500 for chop boxes and trunks.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the GES described the claims as false and clarified that Free SHS remains in effect. It also stated that the Director-General has not directed parents or guardians to make any payment for chop boxes, trunks or other items.

The Service further explained that the Director-General does not have the authority to cancel the Free SHS policy.
GES has therefore urged parents, guardians and students not to make payments based on the social media claims and advised the public to rely only on information from authorised GES channels. It also cautioned against creating or circulating false information that could cause confusion and anxiety.
