The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has cautioned customers in the Ashanti Region against illegally reconnecting their electricity supply after disconnection.
The Regional General Manager for Ashanti South, Ing. Jonathan Kofi Adjabeng, described the growing practice as unlawful and dangerous, stressing that self-reconnection constitutes a criminal offence under the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s Consumer Services Regulations (L.I. 2413, 2020). He warned that offenders would face legal consequences.
According to him, illegal reconnections not only result in revenue losses for the company but also pose significant safety risks, including fire outbreaks, electrocution and damage to transformers and other installations, which can disrupt power supply to entire communities.
Ing. Adjabeng announced plans for a special enforcement exercise to clamp down on the practice, with intensified inspections and monitoring across the region.
He urged customers with outstanding bills to regularise their accounts and apply for lawful reconnection through ECG offices, adding that the company remains open to discussing payment arrangements with those facing financial challenges.
