The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed that three suspects have been arrested in connection with a violent incident that disrupted the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru.
The violence occurred on Thursday, February 19, 2026, leaving a number of students hospitalised and causing widespread concern across the regional academic community.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Monday, February 23, 2026, the Regional Director, Dr Juliette Dufie Otami, said security agencies had made progress in tracking down those responsible.
“About three people have been arrested as of yesterday. We are still investigating the matter,” she said.
The identities of the arrested individuals have not been disclosed. Authorities are reviewing video footage and eyewitness accounts to determine whether additional suspects were involved in organising the disturbance.
Dr Dufie Otami also confirmed that all students who were hospitalised following the incident have since been discharged. A student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School, who was reportedly the main target of the attack, is among those who have recovered.
“They have been discharged and they are okay; they have all been treated, and they have all been brought back to the schools, and they are okay now,” she said.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that tensions between rival student groups built up throughout the day before breaking into open confrontation during the track events. Reports suggest the Obrachire student was surrounded and attacked by a group believed to be affiliated with the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS), and was struck with stones and wooden sticks before bystanders intervened.
A video showing the injured student amid a panicked crowd circulated widely online and has intensified calls for stronger security measures at inter-school sporting events in Ghana.
