President John Dramani Mahama has expressed strong optimism that a new float glass manufacturing plant under construction at Shama in the Western Region will rank among the largest in Africa and significantly boost Ghana’s export earnings.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the project and the commissioning of a sanitary wares factory by KEDA (Ghana) Ceramics Company Limited, the President said the investment would transform Ghana’s glass industry and reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imports.

He revealed that Ghana imported more than 65,000 tonnes of glass products in 2024, valued at nearly $25 million, to meet demand in the construction, automobile, and manufacturing sectors. According to him, the new float glass factory will reverse this trend by cutting imports, conserving foreign exchange, and positioning Ghana as a key regional exporter.

“When completed, this will be one of the largest float glass facilities in Africa,” President Mahama stated, adding that the country will export glass products to other African nations, Europe, and beyond.

The plant is expected to produce 1,400 tonnes of glass per day at full capacity, with projected annual export earnings of nearly $100 million.

President Mahama emphasized that the project marks a major step toward industrial expansion, job creation, and strengthening Ghana’s manufacturing base.
