The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has reiterated the government’s dedication to establishing the Ghana Defence University, confirming that strategic measures are underway to finalize the project.

During a site inspection of the university’s proposed location, the Minister announced that the government, via the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), is currently arranging sustainable funding and the infrastructure necessary for the institution’s commencement. He revealed that GH¢25 million has been designated as seed money under the 2026 GETFund formula to launch the initial phase.

Mr. Iddrisu further noted that a legal framework is being developed, with his office working alongside the Office of the Attorney-General to prepare a draft bill for parliamentary approval.

Praising the military’s standards, the Education Minister said, “If there is any institution of the state that still holds the highest standards of professionalism, it is our military.” He also suggested that the university incorporate modern fields like Artificial Intelligence to ensure military training keeps pace with global technological and security trends.

The Minister was joined by the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, who praised the Education Minister’s proactive leadership on the project.

The Chief of Defence Staff, William Agyapong, added that the university would benefit more than just the Ghana Armed Forces, offering professional training to the Police Service, Prisons Service, and security agencies from neighboring countries. Once completed, the institution is intended to serve as a hub for military research and strategic training to bolster regional security and national development.
