Black Starlets head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has declared that Ghana’s objective is to secure the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title following the tournament draw.

Ghana, two-time champions with previous victories in 1995 and 1999, has been placed in Group D alongside Algeria, Senegal, and South Africa.

“We aim to win the trophy. The last time we won the trophy was in 1999, so that is our target,” Ogum stated during an interview with Asempa FM.

The coach emphasized that the primary goal of winning the tournament would naturally facilitate their progression to the global stage.

“We have to aim at qualifying for the World Cup, so if we aim for the trophy, qualifying for the World Cup will be easy for us. For us, we are Ghana, and we are capable of repeating what our predecessors did, but we are also a confident squad,” he added.

Scheduled to be held in Morocco from May 13 to June 2, the competition will see 16 of the continent’s premier youth teams competing for the trophy.

The tournament also acts as the qualifying route for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. All eight teams that reach the quarter-finals will earn a spot in the world championship, while two additional slots will be awarded to the best third-placed teams to complete Africa’s ten-team representation.
