Asante Kotoko have refuted allegations that interim head coach Prince Owusu went AWOL, clarifying that his recent absence from training was officially sanctioned.

The denial comes amid mounting pressure on Owusu, whose side has recorded only two victories in their last eight outings. This poor run of form has left the Porcupine Warriors in sixth place, trailing league leaders Medeama SC by 10 points.

Speculation regarding Owusu’s status intensified after he missed Thursday’s training session, leading to rumors that he had abandoned the team following reported threats from fans.

However, the club issued a formal statement to address the situation:

“The club wishes to firmly debunk rumours suggesting that Interim Head Coach Prince Yaw Owusu has left the team’s camp without notice. These claims are untrue. Prince duly sought permission from management to attend to urgent family matters as he continues to mourn the passing of his beloved mother. He is expected to return to Kumasi this morning and any further updates or decisions will be officially communicated in due course.”

Management further confirmed that Owusu, who took over from Karim Zito, will lead the team until a permanent head coach is named. Asante Kotoko are set to return to league action against Dreams FC on May 3.
