Former Black Stars defender Daniel Opare has warned that the Ghanaian national team will be “in deep trouble” should Mohammed Kudus fail to recover in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Tottenham Hotspur forward is currently facing a race against time to be fit for the June tournament following a fresh hamstring injury setback. While the specific details of the injury are not yet fully known, expectations are that Kudus will be sidelined for the remainder of the club season, placing his participation in the global showpiece in doubt.
Kudus, who found the net twice during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, had recorded nine goals across all competitions for his club before being sidelined in January.
“If he doesn’t come back, we’re in deep trouble,” Opare stated in an interview with JoySports. “Like I said, football is, you know, the ones there can play, but I think with Kudus in there, he will add more value to the team. So, you know, fingers crossed, we pray that he recovers on time so that he can make the World Cup. You understand.”
Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz faces a June 1 deadline to finalize his squad for the expanded 48-team tournament.
