Former Black Stars defender Daniel Opare believes Ghana’s national team is capable of delivering an unexpected performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even as worries persist regarding their current level of play.
Ghana is set to make its fifth appearance at the tournament, competing in Group L against England, Croatia, and Panama. The team is seeking its first knockout stage qualification since 2010, though recent results have been poor. A streak of four consecutive losses resulted in the sacking of Otto Addo and the subsequent hiring of 73-year-old Carlos Queiroz to lead the rebuilding effort.
Despite these challenges, Opare expressed optimism during an interview with JoySports.
“This is football, anything can happen,” he said. “They can really surprise us. Sometimes, it takes an individual to change the whole game.”
The former defender emphasized the importance of a unified approach for the squad.
“If they keep up with the mentality of ‘we’re here to play, win, build ourselves’ with that one spirit, I think they are capable,” Opare added.
Queiroz has until June 1 to finalize his squad for the expanded 48-team event. As part of their preparations, the Black Stars are scheduled to play friendly matches against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2.
