The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has closed parts of the Ashaiman China Mall warehouse after discovering products suspected to be substandard during an inspection exercise.

The items involved include mattresses, electrical bulbs, and other electrical appliances believed to have been produced with inferior materials.

The operation formed part of the Authority’s second day of enforcement activities targeting companies involved in the production and distribution of low-quality goods in Ghana.

Speaking to the media after the exercise on Tuesday, May 19, the Regional Manager of the GSA, Clement Kubati, disclosed that several of the products failed quality and safety tests conducted by the Authority.

“It’s not only the mattresses, but we also have issues with the bulbs. We sampled about 15 electrical bulbs, and all of them are fake. These are things that can cause fire in homes of people. We’re going to pack the mattresses and bulbs, we’re going to secure them and lock the warehouse. The law must take its course,” he said.

According to the GSA, the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to protect consumers from unsafe products and enforce compliance with national quality standards.

The Authority says it remains committed to intensifying market surveillance and taking action against businesses found violating product safety regulations.
