The candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Jamal, has won the Ayawaso East by-election, according to official results declared by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday evening.
Jubilant supporters flooded parts of the constituency to celebrate after the announcement, marking a decisive victory for the NDC in the closely watched poll.
The by-election was conducted on Tuesday, March 3, to fill the parliamentary vacancy created by the death of the late Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, in January. Four other candidates contested the seat: Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and two independent candidates, Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda and David Kanor.
Early projections had indicated a strong lead for Baba Jamal, a forecast that was confirmed when final results were announced.
Although voter turnout was reported to be lower than expected in the morning hours, observers attributed this partly to Ramadan, with some voters arriving at polling stations later in the day.
Security was tight throughout the exercise. The Ghana Police Service deployed personnel across polling centres and key locations to ensure peace and order. Officials described the process as calm and orderly, with adequate security presence to manage any incidents during voting, counting, and collation.
The Inspector-General of Police also toured parts of the constituency as polls closed, reinforcing assurances of a peaceful electoral process.
