The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has announced that the Ghana Card will become a mandatory requirement for the purchase or renewal of all motor insurance policies starting January 1, 2026.
In a statement signed by the Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, the NIC said the new measure is part of efforts to strengthen transparency and regulation within Ghana’s insurance industry. Under the policy, all individual motorists must present their Ghana Card at the point of sale, while corporate clients will be required to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) for motor insurance transactions.
The Commission noted that the initiative is aimed at reducing insurance fraud, enhancing Know-Your-Customer and Anti-Money Laundering compliance, improving claims management, and aligning the sector with international financial services standards.
The NIC has urged motorists to prepare ahead of the implementation date by ensuring they have their Ghana Card when accessing motor insurance services.
