The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) says it inherited more than 440,000 pending driver’s licence applications, a situation it describes as both an operational and security risk.

Speaking in an interview on Friday, February 13, Director of Corporate Affairs, Stephen Attuh, said the Authority introduced a centralised 24-hour processing centre to fast-track licence issuance and curb unauthorised access and the circulation of fake licences.

According to him, the intervention has already cleared about 400,000 applications, although some applicants are still reporting delays dating back to 2023.

To further reduce the backlog, the Authority has expanded its round-the-clock operations with a new centre at Adenta, while similar 24-hour services are also running at the ports in Takoradi and Tema.

Mr Attuh said the long-term plan is to extend 24-hour operations to regional offices nationwide, with two-shift systems currently in place where full round-the-clock service is not yet feasible.
