American gospel artist and worship icon Ron Kenoly has passed away at age 81, according to an announcement made by his longtime music director on social media.

The news has prompted widespread tributes from the global Christian music community.

Kenoly gained international recognition as a major figure in contemporary praise and worship music beginning in the early 1990s. His impact extended across continents, influencing worship practices in churches throughout Africa, Europe, the Americas and Asia.

A native of Coffeyville, Kansas, Kenoly achieved global fame following the 1992 release of his album Lift Him Up, which ranked among the top-selling live worship recordings of the period.

His compositions including “Ancient of Days,” “Jesus Is Alive” and “We’re Going Up” became widely performed in churches around the world, recognized for their energetic musical arrangements, biblically-rooted lyrics and focus on communal, celebratory worship.

Throughout his multi-decade career, Kenoly produced numerous well-received albums such as Ron Kenoly, God Is Able, Welcome Home and Sing Out with One Voice. His musical approach combined elements of gospel, contemporary Christian music and praise choruses, typically featuring large vocal ensembles and active congregational participation.

In addition to his recording work, Kenoly held pastoral and worship leadership roles at Jubilee Christian Center in San Jose, California, where he served for an extended period.
