The youth wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Kpandai Constituency in the Northern Region has petitioned the party’s national leadership to take all lawful steps to reclaim the Kpandai parliamentary seat following a Supreme Court ruling that awarded the seat to the New Patriotic Party’s candidate, Mathew Nyindam.
The petition comes after an earlier demonstration over the same matter and the loss of the seat by the NDC’s candidate, Daniel Nsala Wakpal.
In the petition, signed by Janfour Wujabon Binipomchie on behalf of the youth wing, the group outlined ten reasons why the party should challenge the ruling, including concerns over the gazette notification date, conflicting gazette notices and what they describe as the true will of the people of Kpandai.
The youth wing argued that the Tamale High Court’s earlier judgment was based on documentary evidence and sworn testimonies which, in their view, established substantial non-compliance with constitutional and electoral laws.
They further contended that reliance on a gazette notification date raises serious constitutional questions, insisting that elections are decided at polling stations and not through administrative processes.
According to the petitioners, the Supreme Court decision has negatively affected grassroots confidence in the party, with supporters and polling agents feeling disappointed and abandoned.
Describing Kpandai as a strategic swing constituency, the youth wing warned that failure to pursue a legal review could weaken the party’s standing and encourage future electoral irregularities.
They maintained that seeking a review is a lawful constitutional right and called for a rerun of the election, which they believe would be the most peaceful and democratic way to restore confidence and uphold the sovereignty of voters in the constituency.
