The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has clarified that contributors to its pension scheme cannot list romantic partners, such as boyfriends or girlfriends, as beneficiaries.
Speaking at a pension literacy forum in Sunyani, Mr. Frank Molbila, General Manager in charge of Benefits, stated that only blood relatives are eligible to be nominated under the scheme. The event, organised in collaboration with the Trades Union Congress (TUC), aimed to educate workers on pension benefits and long-term financial planning.
Mr. Molbila emphasized the value of SSNIT pensions, describing them as a reliable and lifelong source of income, noting that beneficiaries continue to receive payments for as long as they live. He encouraged all workers to enrol and actively plan for retirement.
He disclosed that SSNIT paid GHC6.77 billion in pensions in 2025 and expects to disburse about GHC8.21 billion by the end of 2026. According to him, the current oldest pensioner is 107 years old, while the highest monthly pension stands at GHC213,000, with the lowest around GHC400.
Touching on invalidity pensions, Mr. Molbila explained that the scheme supports members with permanent disabilities that prevent them from working. He revealed that the highest invalidity pension currently stands at GHC19,923 per month, and that SSNIT paid GHC40.8 million in invalidity benefits in 2025.
He further advised members to regularly update their records, especially beneficiary details, to ensure smooth access to benefits.
