The government has introduced new restrictions on the use of sirens on official vehicles, with eligibility now to be determined and approved by the Presidency.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak said the directive forms part of efforts to improve road safety and regulate the use of official privileges among government appointees.

Under the new framework, only individuals who can provide clear justification for the use of sirens will be granted approval by President John Dramani Mahama. An application system has been introduced, requiring requests to be submitted through the Interior Minister and forwarded to the Presidency for final consideration.

The Minister explained that even government ministers are required to apply, with approvals based strictly on assessed operational need.

He added that the President has directed strict enforcement of the policy, including action against unauthorised use of sirens by officials.

The policy is aimed at curbing abuse of privileges, promoting discipline, and ensuring the responsible use of state resources on the country’s roads.
