President John Dramani Mahama has named Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu as Ghana’s High Commissioner-Designate to Nigeria, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Sunday, March 1, 2026.

The appointment fills a diplomatic gap left by the recall of the previous envoy, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, who was withdrawn from the post on February 7, 2026, following allegations of voter inducement during the NDC parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency — a race Jamal had won while seeking to succeed the late MP, Nasser Mahama Toure.

Baba Sadiq, widely recognised for his background in Ghana’s creative and media sectors, most recently contested the 2024 general elections as the National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate for Okaikwei Central.

In his new role, Sadiq will be responsible for strengthening trade and economic ties between Ghana and Nigeria — West Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation — while also deepening cultural exchange and managing broader diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The appointment is widely seen as a move to restore stability to Ghana’s representation in Abuja following the disruption caused by Baba Jamal’s abrupt recall.
