The United States Department of State has authorized the departure of non-emergency personnel and their families from its embassy in Abuja, citing worsening security conditions in Nigeria.

In an updated travel advisory issued on April 8, 2026, the Department warned of persistent threats including crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping, urging American citizens to reconsider travel to the country. Several states have also been added to the “Do Not Travel” list due to heightened risks.

Officials highlighted the prevalence of violent crimes such as armed robbery, carjacking, and kidnapping for ransom, with foreign nationals often targeted. The advisory also noted ongoing threats from extremist groups, as well as instability in regions affected by communal clashes and unrest.

Additionally, concerns were raised about limited healthcare capacity, with authorities advising travelers to obtain comprehensive insurance. The U.S. government cautioned that its ability to provide emergency assistance in high-risk areas remains constrained.
