Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that more evacuation flights will be deployed next week to bring Ghanaians home from South Africa amid rising xenophobic tensions.
He said the government is continuing a coordinated repatriation exercise through Ghana’s diplomatic mission in South Africa to ensure the safe return of citizens affected by growing hostility and insecurity targeting foreign nationals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the evacuation follows renewed concerns over attacks and intimidation in parts of South Africa, which have heightened fear among some Ghanaian communities.
Returnees arriving in Ghana have been supported by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) with relief items, while government prepares a broader reintegration package that includes financial support and assistance to help them resettle and rebuild their livelihoods.
Mr. Ablakwa assured that additional flights are being arranged for Ghanaians who have registered for evacuation, with efforts underway to ensure all affected citizens are safely brought home.
Authorities say the exercise is being coordinated carefully to address logistical challenges and ensure an orderly and secure evacuation process.
