The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has assured families displaced by the recent fire outbreak at the Police Barracks opposite the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters in Accra Central that government will provide immediate relief, including temporary accommodation and essential supplies, as reconstruction plans get underway.

The minister gave the assurance on Thursday, June 4, during a visit to the scene of the fire, which displaced several families and destroyed properties.

He was accompanied by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service. The delegation toured the affected area to assess the extent of damage, interact with residents and obtain firsthand information on the challenges confronting victims.

Addressing displaced families, Mr. Muntaka expressed sympathy and reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting them during the recovery period.

“The visit was to assess the situation firsthand, interact with affected residents, and assure them of the government’s commitment to supporting them in this difficult period. Arrangements are being made to provide temporary accommodation while plans for reconstruction are being finalised,” he stated in a Facebook post.

He added that victims would also receive cash support, clothing and other relief items through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The fire, which ravaged sections of the barracks, caused extensive destruction of personal belongings and left several households displaced. Although emergency responders were able to contain the blaze, many residents are now grappling with the loss of property and the challenge of rebuilding their lives.

As part of his visit, the Interior Minister also called on a police officer who sustained injuries during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital. He conveyed government’s solidarity and assured the officer of continued support throughout his recovery.
