The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has warned that delays in the release of funds for the national fertiliser subsidy programme could significantly reduce harvests this planting season and worsen farmers’ incomes.
According to the association, many farmers across the country are unable to begin full-scale cultivation due to the unavailability of subsidised inputs, forcing some to either purchase fertiliser at high market prices or reduce their farm sizes.
PFAG President Douglas Annor said the group has formally petitioned the Ministry of Food and Agriculture over the issue but is yet to receive a response, cautioning that continued delays could push many farmers into financial distress.
Farmers in several growing regions have also expressed concern, with some describing their farmlands as “hungry” and unable to support healthy crop growth without fertiliser. They warn that if the situation persists, it could lead to widespread crop failure and a significant drop in national food production.
The association further noted that despite policy pledges to strengthen the agriculture sector, farmers are still awaiting subsidised fertiliser supplies in 2025.
