Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has officially resigned from the Council of State after President John Dramani Mahama accepted her resignation, bringing months of consultations over the matter to a close.

According to the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Justice Akuffo submitted her resignation letter in September 2025 but did not state her reasons for stepping down. He explained that although the President was required to accept the resignation, the process was initially delayed to allow the Council of State to engage her in a bid to address any concerns.

He noted that after those engagements, the Council advised that her decision be upheld, leading to the formal acceptance of her resignation by the President.

Justice Akuffo, who served as Chief Justice from 2017 to 2020, was appointed to the Council of State as one of the President’s eminent advisors. Her exit creates a vacancy on the constitutional advisory body.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu added that the process to appoint a replacement has already begun in line with constitutional procedures and will be completed in the coming weeks.
