The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the temporary closure of all public and private schools in the Yendi Municipality to allow students, teachers and staff to participate in mourning activities for the late Dagbon overlord, Yaa-Naa Abukari II.
The closure, which took effect from midday on July 13, will remain in force until July 16, with academic activities scheduled to resume on July 17. The decision followed consultations between the GES, the Yendi Municipal Assembly and the Gbewaa Palace to honour the late king and respect Dagbon cultural traditions.
The Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, Muniru Sogri, said the government approved the closure to enable residents and the school community to take part in the funeral rites. Meanwhile, the Dagbon Traditional Council has announced that the third-day Islamic prayers for the late Yaa-Naa Abukari II will be held at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on July 16, inviting the public to join in prayers for the repose of his soul.
