The government has announced plans to introduce a Diaspora National Service programme aimed at strengthening ties between Ghana and young Ghanaians raised abroad through a short-term cultural and national immersion initiative.

The proposal was unveiled by the Director of the Diaspora Affairs Office at the Office of the President, Kofi Okyere-Darko, during the maiden Ghana Diaspora Students Forum, organised by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) chapters in Germany, the UK and China. The proposed programme would allow participants to spend about two months in Ghana to gain first-hand experience of the country’s culture, institutions and society.

Speaking at the virtual forum, Mr Okyere-Darko said the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to deepen diaspora engagement through knowledge exchange, innovation, investment and professional collaboration rather than encouraging permanent return. He urged Ghanaian students abroad to remain connected to the country’s development throughout their careers.

The forum also featured discussions on scholarships, skills development, entrepreneurship and career opportunities, with speakers encouraging participants to build strong professional networks and contribute to Ghana’s growth. Organisers said the event marks the beginning of sustained engagement between the Ghanaian student diaspora and key national stakeholders.
