The government has announced plans to construct 50,000 housing units for teachers across Ghana under the Teacher Dabre Initiative, a programme aimed at improving teacher welfare and boosting retention, particularly in rural communities.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 20, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu said the project would be implemented through a decentralised approach, with the District Assemblies Common Fund overseeing construction at the regional and district levels. The Ministry of Education will provide additional support, including the use of Ghana Secondary School Pension (GSOP) funds as collateral to facilitate the initiative.
Mr. Iddrisu also revealed that the government is close to finalising arrangements for a 20 per cent incentive allowance for teachers who voluntarily accept postings to rural areas, describing it as part of broader efforts to improve conditions of service and attract more educators to underserved communities.
The housing initiative and rural posting allowance form part of the government’s wider strategy to address accommodation challenges, enhance teacher welfare and strengthen the delivery of education across the country.
