Twenty-five persons, including foreign nationals and Ghanaians, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in illegal gold trading, smelting and assaying in Accra.
The arrests were made during two separate operations conducted by the Ghana Gold Board, the Goldbod Taskforce and National Security operatives at Dome Pillar 2 and Akweteyman–Achimota.
A statement from the Ghana Gold Board said the joint team retrieved more than GH¢64,000 and US$112,500 in cash, as well as several gold bars and other exhibits during the operations.
All suspects have been granted police inquiry bail. Some have already appeared before court, while others remain under investigation.
Mr Richard Nunekpeku, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board, reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to sanitising the gold trade and ensuring compliance with national regulations.
He cautioned that all unlicensed gold transactions remain prohibited and warned that offenders would face the full consequences of the law.
