The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, has announced plans to formally petition the Ghana Education Service over what he describes as “dehumanising” and misleading content in a Junior High School Social Studies textbook.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 17, the legislator cited pages from the Aki-Ola Series Social Studies Textbook, which reportedly present the “benefits Ghana has derived from colonisation.” He condemned the portrayal, arguing that it misrepresents history and downplays the inhuman nature and long-term impact of colonial rule on Ghanaians.

Mr Agbana warned that such narratives risk distorting the understanding of young learners and undermining their dignity and identity. He said Ghana’s education system must be rooted in truth, justice and historical integrity.

He indicated that his petition will call on the Ghana Education Service to immediately review and recall the affected books and ensure that the content is removed from the national curriculum, a move expected to spark wider debate on how colonial history is taught in Ghana’s basic schools.
