Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has indicated that a return to the national team for veteran forward Andre Ayew ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains a distinct possibility.
Speaking on Adom FM, Adams noted that the 36-year-old’s active status and recent move to the Dutch Eredivisie keep him in contention for a spot in the Black Stars squad, despite a long absence from international duty.
“Dede Ayew, too, is picking up, and as long as he has not retired, I won’t be surprised if he makes it into the [2026 World Cup] squad,” Adams stated.
The former Le Havre attacker recently signed with NAC Breda in January after a period as a free agent. While he has started in the club’s last three fixtures, he is still searching for his first goal in the Netherlands.
Ayew, a mainstay of the national team for over a decade, has not featured for Ghana since March 2024, when he appeared in friendly matches against Nigeria and Uganda. Since that period, he has been consistently overlooked for both Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifying cycles.
However, with the 2026 tournament approaching, the Sports Minister’s comments suggest the door is not yet closed on the veteran’s international career.
