A 20-year-old woman, Promise Yayra Asamani, has been arrested by the police for publishing false allegations about an Uber driver on social media.
The case began when a 43-year-old driver, Selasie Kwaku Anthonio, reported a viral Snapchat post that falsely described him as a “murderer and a thief,” and accused him of carrying weapons and using signal jammers. The post, which included his photograph and vehicle details, quickly spread online, causing public panic and leading to the suspension of his Uber account.
Police investigations traced the post to Promise, who admitted she shared the claims based solely on a story told by her sister, Stephanie Asamani. Stephanie had earlier taken a ride with the driver and became suspicious after observing certain items in the vehicle and hearing a phone conversation, prompting her to recount the experience to her family.
Authorities noted that Promise failed to respond to an initial police invitation before her eventual arrest. She later confessed that she had no evidence to support the serious accusations made in the post.
Promise Yayra Asamani has since been granted police enquiry bail as investigations continue. Police have also warned the public against spreading unverified information, emphasizing that false publication is a criminal offence under Ghanaian law.
