The BBC has announced plans to cut between 1,800 and 2,000 jobs, nearly one in 10 of its workforce as part of efforts to save £500 million over the next two years amid mounting financial pressures.

Interim Director General Rhodri Talfan Davies said the corporation is facing a widening gap between costs and income, driven by high production expenses, declining licence fee revenue, and broader economic challenges. He warned that all areas of the organisation are under review, with the possibility that some channels or services could be scrapped.

Mr Davies acknowledged the cuts would be difficult for staff but stressed the need to make careful decisions to protect core services across radio, television, and online platforms. He added that further details on how the changes will affect audiences are expected in the coming months.

The move has drawn concern from unions, with Bectu warning the scale of the cuts could have a significant impact on both employees and the broadcaster’s overall operations.
