More than 620,000 candidates across Ghana have begun the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with authorities enforcing stricter measures to prevent cheating.
The nationwide exam, organized by the West African Examinations Council, runs from May 4 to May 11 and involves 620,141 candidates from over 20,000 schools.
WAEC officials have warned that any form of examination malpractice will attract severe sanctions, including penalties for possessing prohibited items such as mobile phones. Candidates have also been cautioned against misconduct toward supervisors and invigilators.
Meanwhile, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Ernest Kofi Davis, confirmed that officials under investigation for previous malpractice cases have been barred from participating in this year’s exams.
The tightened measures are aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the BECE, a key national examination that determines placement into senior high schools.
