The Ghana Center for Democratic Development has expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama’s call for legislation to criminalise the demand for sexual or romantic relationships in exchange for employment.
Executive Director H. Kwasi Prempeh described the proposed law as “long overdue,” pledging that the organisation is ready to collaborate with the Attorney-General’s Department to draft the bill at no cost.
President Mahama made the proposal during a town hall meeting in Koforidua, where he condemned the practice as unacceptable and called for strict legal sanctions against offenders. His remarks followed concerns raised by a female student about gender inequality in employment opportunities.
The President emphasized that women are equally capable as men and highlighted his administration’s commitment to achieving gender parity in public appointments by 2028, in line with Ghana’s Affirmative Action law.
The proposed legislation is expected to address workplace exploitation while reinforcing broader efforts to promote fairness and equality in the job market.
