The management of Ghana Hostels Limited (GHL) has demanded an immediate and unqualified apology from the Acting Rent Control Commissioner, Fredrick Opoku, following allegations regarding rent charges at the University of Ghana’s Pentagon Hostel.

In a press release issued on May 13, GHL stated that remarks made by Mr. Opoku during a Hitz FM interview created a misleading impression of the facility’s operations. While acknowledging the hostel is an investment by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), GHL clarified that it independently manages day-to-day operations, tenancy, and pricing.

Management asserted that the Acting Rent Commissioner’s comments were “not based on adequate due diligence” and falsely suggested the institution was indifferent to student welfare.

Defending its rates, GHL noted that standard four-in-one rooms cost ¢7,392 annually at the Old Pentagon and ¢8,876 at the New Pentagon. The company explained that these fees, which include water, electricity, and ¢100 JCR dues, break down to approximately ¢821.33 and ¢986.22 per month.

GHL rejected accusations of exploitation, maintaining that its rates are among the most competitive compared to other private hostels on campus. Addressing claims of a ¢28,000 fee mentioned during the radio program, the company clarified that no such rate exists in its standard structure.

According to GHL, less than five percent of its rooms are premium units with extra amenities like air conditioning and queen-size beds, which are strictly optional.

“The standard room type of 4-in-1 constitute more than 65% of the total rooms of the Hostel which are priced at comparatively lower rates,” the statement read. GHL further specified that prices cover the full academic year rather than a single semester.

“Accordingly, Management of GHL expects an immediate and unqualified apology from Acting Rent Commissioner for the unfortunate remarks made during the programme,” the statement concluded.
